This course explores recent legislative and IRS requirements for hospitals to obtain and maintain tax-exempt status. The course examines new requirements imposed under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) as well as the excise tax imposed on exempt hospitals that fail to meet Code Sec. 501(r) exemption requirements. IRS Form 990 reporting specifics for tax-exempt hospitals also are described. Upon completion of this course, the user should be able to: Identify factors considered under the community benefit standard applied to tax-exempt hospitals, Identify the community health needs assessment requirements established for tax-exempt hospitals under the PPACA, Recognize major features of the IRS regulations under the PPACA for financial assistance policies, reporting, and noncompliance penalties, and Recognize the tax issues associated with regional health information organizations, group purchasing organizations, and joint ventures between tax-exempt and for-profit health entities.
